Computerized Tomographic Coronary Angiography

It is well known that coronary artery disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the civilised world. Coronary artery disease is caused by the development of atherosclerotic plaques in the wall of the thin vessels of the heart, the coronary vessels. To date, the standard method of studying the coronary vessels, the reference method as we used to call it, is Invasive Coronary Angiography. CT Coronary Angiography (Computerized Tomography Coronary Angiography) is an alternative method of studying the coronary arteries, from which a large number of patients can benefit, always following the instructions of the treating specialist, who will refer for the examination. CT Coronary Angiography is a simple, painless and bloodless method, as it does not require catheterisation as in Invasive Coronary Angiography.

The advantages

Due to its significant advantages, CT Coronary Angiography is gaining ground for its application in clinical practice and is now a reliable diagnostic tool in the clinician's quiver. CT Coronary Angiography has also been used with very good results to study the patency of stents at rechecks after their placement, as well as the patency of grafts after bypass procedures.

In general, patients at low or intermediate risk for coronary artery disease may benefit from CT Coronary Angiography, as well as asymptomatic patients with increased risk factors or patients with questionable results from other cardiac screening.
